SAGE Project Introduction

The SAGE project officially started on 1 August 2017. The Eurostars funded project (# E10882)  has a duration of 3 years. The consortium has 3 partners from 2 different countries, Universität Leipzig, OpenLink Software and Geomer.

The project aims to develop scalable semantic geospatial data management based partly on

distributed processing solutions such as FLINK or SPARK. Geospatial datasets are the largest data sources on the Web of Data (up to 30 billion facts in RDF) and thus demand dedicated solutions for dealing with (1) their intrinsic complexity (up up 5 dimensions, multi-polygons) and (2) the rapid changes in user-contributed data. Current triple stores do not scale well with large amounts of Geospatial data.

The project shall develop scalable algorithms for the extraction, integration, storage and querying of up to 5-dimensional Big Geospatial data (in the order of billions of facts). The approach will be combined to a suite for geospatial analytics applications, which will be validated in three real-world use cases: disaster management, data delivery and services based on open data. We will integrate our approach into the RDF Triple Store that is most commonly used Worldwide, that being the Virtuoso.

The SAGE project kick-off meeting took place at the University of Paderborn in Germany on the 11th - 12th September 2017. During this meeting all partners gave presentation on their companies and the work packages they will lead and outlines the tasks and deliverables involved. Following the presentations breakout sessions were held to define the initial tasks to be worked on in WP1 to define the project requirements (use cases) and architecture, which are requirement to meet the first milestone due in M6.
